    What would we do without...

The other day I was coaching one of the crew through their voice over on Skype. He recorded it, rendered it, compressed it, uploaded it, emailed it and then I downloaded it. Once finished, we got to lammenting on how we wished we could do voice overs like Rob Machado before Forrest pondered this question.

"What did we do before all this technology?"

The answer seemed pretty simple to me. We took over the family business and only dreamed of becoming film makers and travelling to all corners of the globe.

As we move into the last week of post production, the film is almost at the point where it becomes public domain—where we find out whether it is good, or dare I say, shit. In today's day-and-age there is much debate about how technology makes something such as making a film possible for anybody. Prices have come down, equipment has become more intuitive and easy to use, and there are forums such as Vimeo and Myspace to broadcast that which anybody can produce. The die hards though, they argue that technology can't and won't ever replace talent. And it's true.

It is almost a year since hatching the idea to make this film, and nine months since buying my first affordable HD camera and plugging it into my sleek new MacBook. Now the litmus test of public scrutiny is iminent. Will the final product resemble the vision I had? And is that vision indeed sound, unique and at all relevant? Does this travelling circus possess any talent at all?

One thing is for sure. The family business is still there. Talent or no talent, it was (and still is) an amazing experience. That experience was in part made possible by cheap technology, but it would never have taken flight without a stack of fantastically committed people.

    Watch this space.

I can't wait...oh, you knew that. In case you didn't know, I appreciate the way you write.

Yes, it IS amazing how life has changed. It is, it is. We had a business that could have become the family business - but knew how destructive that would be to "our guys" dreams. It's unfair to strap the younger generation with the famly business. Go out and explore this big, wonderful world when you're young. Power on, Anthony.

Waiting with anticipation for the great movie that will be.... The technology is available to all of us, but only the talented and determined ones have the nous to make the most of it and use it to realize their dreams! Keep your head down and your mind open. Best of luck getting through the last 10%. Louise

Yes my son, the family business is still here in Oz - your preschool teacher 'warned' us you were 'gifted'. We held your hand a while and have your heart forever, it is you who have the vision and courage to fly. You are a mountain in our plain, you know we are proud of you and always here to catch you if you fall - but you won't - your travelling circus has an amazing circus tent that is your community supporting & educating you. It is Gods' world and he wants to show it to you, and you show it to others through your talented eyes. Bring on Banff.
